Stand by Me l’hanno visto tutti. Su Stand by me ci hanno pianto tutti. Persino il titolo, Ricordo di un’estate, è fin troppo evocativo. Tra la banda dei ragazzi ce n’era uno un po’ più affascinante, un po’ più personaggio, un po’ più grande dentro. Chris Chambers, il biondino. Quello bello appunto.

Bene, Chris Chambers era River Phoenix, allora giovanissimo attore dal roseo futuro hollywoodiano. Il prototipo del bello e dannato, amicone di Johnny Depp e dei Red Hot Frusciante e Flea. Morto a 23 anni, nel giorno di Halloween.

River deve il suo primo nome alla fantasia dei genitori, due hippies che vissero la Summer of Love di fine anni ’60, che si ispirarono al fiume del libro Siddharta di Herman Hesse. Il suo secondo nome, Jude, deriva invece dal famoso brano dei Beatles, Hey Jude.

Lo speedball dovrebbero classificarlo tra le armi di distruzione di massa. È il nome che viene dato al mix tra eroina e cocaina. Un vasocontraente e un vasodilatatore insieme. Una bomba. Il cuore, semplicemente, ti scoppia. Muori, e muori male.

A causa della morte prematura, River mancò diversi ruoli importanti, come in Intervista col Vampiro. Quando era ancora in vita, invece, rifiutò clamorosamente il ruolo da protagonista ne Il Corvo, che andò poi a Brandon Lee, figlio del grande Bruce. Per uno scherzo del destino, Brandon muore tragicamente sul set poco dopo.

La notte del 30 ottobre 1993 River Phoenix si trovava al Viper Room, club in parte di proprietà di Johnny Depp. Quando assunse droga in modo incontrollato erano presenti anche Flea, John Frusciante e Corey Taylor degli Slipknot. Solo il fratello Joaquin si accorse della gravità della situazione, quando River era ormai riverso sul marciapiede esterno del locale in preda alle convulsioni. Quella sera River aveva i capelli corti, così nessuno lo riconobbe mentre agonizzava. Morì come un cane.

Un destino strano. Molte dediche postume, dai R.E.M. ai Red Hot Chili Peppers a Omar Pedrini. Un destino strano. Il suo ruolo perfetto doveva essere Rimbaud in Poeti dall’Inferno. Un destino strano. Stand by Me.

Everyone have seen the movie Stand by Me. Everyone have cried seeing Stand by Me. The title is enough, evocative. Among the protagonists, there were one guy more charming, more personality, a little bigger inside. Chris Chambers, the blonde one. The handsome one.

Well, Chris Chambers was River Phoenix, very young actor with a great future in Hollywood. The good-looking and damned prototype, friend of Johnny Depp and Flea and Frusciante from Red Hot Chili Peppers. Died at 23, in Halloween day.

The name River comes from the fantasy of his parents, two hippies which lived in the Summer of Love, late ’60s, that take inspiration from the river of the Herman Hesse’s book Siddharta. His second name, Jude, comes instead from the famous Beatles song Hey Jude.

Speedball would be scheduled as weapon of mass destruction. Is the name given to the heroin and cocaine mix. A vasodilator and its opposite together. A bomb. The heart simply explodes. You die, and you die in a very bad way.

Because of his premature death, River missed some important movie roles, like in Interview with the Vampire. When he was still alive, he refused the protagonist role in The Crow, role that was given to Brandon Lee, son of the great Bruce. For a destiny joke, Brandon will die on the movie set a little later.
